Employee Profile: Julie Hayward

Julie was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, before moving to the Lower Mainland in 2018. She completed her post-secondary education at the University of Alberta, where she earned a Master of Science in Surgery. Her academic specialization focused on islet transplantation research for the treatment of Type I Diabetes. During her studies, she published a paper in the journal Diabetes titled “Cotransplantation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells with Neonatal Porcine Islets Improve Graft Function in Diabetic Mice.” Although she never initially envisioned a career in policing given her scientific background, her experience working in a civilian role at the Vancouver Police Department sparked a strong interest in the field. She discovered that the criminal intelligence analyst career path closely aligned with her strengths, as it requires many of the same analytical and research skills used in scientific investigation. She began her career at CFSEU-BC in 2021 as a Junior Criminal Intelligence Analyst and has since worked with the Criminal Records Review Unit, the Crime Guns Intelligence and Investigations Group (CGIIG), and the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (OMG) group. Currently, she is part of the Illegal Firearms Intelligence Team (IFIT) within CGIIG, where she focuses on intelligence related to firearms trafficking, smuggling, and manufacturing. Outside of work, Julie enjoys going to the gym, running, cooking, doing puzzles, hiking, and spending time with her family. She also has two pets: a 14-year-old cat named Max and a Bernedoodle named Barkley.
