Girls in Gangs: Belonging should never come at the cost of your future

Throughout July, CFSEU-BC is proud to launch our Girls in Gangs public awareness campaign, an education and prevention initiative focused on helping young people, parents, educators, and communities better understand the realities of female gang involvement.

When people think about gangs, they often picture young men. However, girls are also vulnerable to recruitment and exploitation, and their pathways into gang involvement are often different. Many are seeking acceptance, protection, belonging, or an escape from difficult circumstances. Rather than being recruited by strangers, many are introduced to gangs by someone they already know and trust, such as a friend, family member, or intimate partner.

This campaign aims to challenge common misconceptions by highlighting the factors that can place girls at risk and emphasizing the importance of early intervention, healthy relationships, and strong community support.

Throughout the month, the CFSEU-BC Media Unit will be sharing educational content across our social media channels, including:

  • Why girls become involved in gangs
  • Common recruitment tactics and warning signs
  • The realities behind the gang lifestyle
  • Prevention strategies for parents, educators, and youth
  • Resources that help young people build safer, healthier futures

By increasing awareness and encouraging conversations before recruitment occurs, we can help reduce vulnerability and empower young people to make informed choices.

We encourage all people to support this initiative by sharing campaign content through your networks and helping promote these important prevention messages within your communities.
