Superintendent Gary Hiar is a member of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) and is currently seconded to the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC), where he holds the position of Deputy Operations Support Officer.
Since joining the Vancouver Police Department in 2005, Superintendent Hiar has served in a variety of operational, investigative, and support roles. His early assignments included the Beat Enforcement Team, Patrol Districts Three and Four, and the Emergency Response Section Crisis Negotiator Team. He has also previously been seconded to CFSEU-BC, serving with several investigative teams, the Uniformed Gang Enforcement Team, and the Legal Application Support Team.
Promoted to Sergeant in 2018, Superintendent Hiar worked in both the Professional Standards Section and the Organized Crime Section. In 2020, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and continued his service within the Professional Standards Section. Following his promotion to Inspector in 2021, he held leadership positions in the General Investigative Section, the Youth Services Section and Mental Health Unit, and later served as District Two Commander within the Operations Division. In 2025, he was promoted to the rank of Superintendent.
As Deputy Operations Support Officer at CFSEU-BC, Superintendent Hiar oversees tactical, intelligence, specialty, and technical operations support units, providing strategic leadership in support of complex organized crime and public safety investigations across British Columbia.
Superintendent Hiar is a Provincially Accredited Team Commander and holds a Master of Business Administration from Simon Fraser University.
Throughout his career, Superintendent Hiar has received commendations and distinctions from the Vancouver Police Department, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia.
